SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The North Florida Fair Association Board of Directors established the Lloyd Rhoden Agricultural Scholarship in 1985 in honor of Mr. Lloyd Rhoden, former North Florida Fair Manager and Leon County Extension Director. One $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to a student majoring in agriculture at a Florida institution of higher learning and can be continued up to 4 years for each high school senior receiving the initial award.
The 2011 Lloyd Rhoden Agricultural Scholarship goes to Ms. Alicia Allison of Gulf County. Alicia is the daughter of Barbara & Johnny Taunton. Along with being an active member in her local 4-H Club, Big Bend River Riders, Alicia has also been a team player and Captain of the Varsity Volleyball team, and a member of the Student Government Association at Wewahitchka High School.
As an active member in 4-H Alicia has participated in many activities at the local, district and state level. She has served as President and Vice President at both the local and district level and has helped with fundraisers and been involved on committees at the State level. Alicia has also been a 4-H Camp Counselor for the past four years.
Through her experience in 4-H, Alicia has gained knowledge in many areas of agriculture and has a special passion for horses, which she says are "the love of her life". Her love for these animals has spurred a desire to seek a degree in the Animal Sciences with a goal of becoming a fully licensed Equine Veterinarian in Gulf county.
To be eligible for the scholarship:
- A nominee must be a graduated high school senior from a county that annually places a county agricultural exhibit in the North Florida Fair.
- A nominee must have indicated through 4-H, FFA, or related activities a sincere interest and potential ability in the field of agriculture.
- A nominee must have achieved an acceptable senior placement test score and acceptable grade point average in high school and must maintain acceptable academic standing to continue receiving the stipend. The recipient must also maintain continuous enrollment with not more than one semester or summer off between two consecutive terms.
Nominations for the scholarship must be made by a County Extension faculty member or a Vocational Agriculture instructor submitted to the selection committee. Applications are due by May 1st, and recipients are selected by July 1st of each year.
